Blue v Green

November 20, 2009

It’s hard to believe that the season is on us.  We’ve bee practicing now for 3 weeks and it’s time for our inner squad dual meet.   We will hold the Blue v Green match at Copper Hills in the main Gym at 7pm on Friday the 20th of November.  These will be wrestle off’s for Varsity and JV and also placement after that.  I look forward to seeing where these boys are and what they have learned.  We have covered a lot so it will be good to see it applied in a setting where I can focus on each wrestler and see how they are coming along.  The boys wanted to make sure we held this meet and are excited for it.  I look forward to meeting the parents and thank you for your support and giving us your sons for the next 3 months!

Parent Meeting October 27th at 7pm

October 8, 2009

We have scheduled our preseason parents meeting.  We will be meeting on October 27th at 7pm in the Copper Hills High School Cafeteria.  We are asking that all wrestlers and at least one parent be present at this meeting.  Anyone unable to attend will need to contact me in advance so we can make sure you have all the required information.  This is going to be a fun exciting season for Copper Hills Wrestling and Coach Humphries and I are excited about working with this great group of boys.

A side note and good news for the athletes, the administration has decided that they will not start requiring a physical for each athlete each year this year.  So if your physical is older than a year old but was done for any Copper Hills sport then you are covered.  Starting next year you will need a new one each year.

Hope you are training and preparing for the season!!

Champions get an early start…

September 23, 2009

I received a letter today from a fellow coach back east, he sent this to a lot of people but it’s worth sharing.

Allen,

My father always used to tell me, “T, you have to do what the good guys do even when you don’t feel like it”. Was he ever right. That lesson alone proved to be a valuable asset long after I stopped competing. Whether it comes to business / work related issues or sports, staying focused on your goal(s) needs to be a steady commitment.

Think of it this way, in order to beat your best competition, you can’t let them get too far ahead of you. This could be as simple as drilling once a week (even during football or baseball season). Strength training at school or at the park, even at home. Just by doing a little of something will skyrocket your confidence and help you feel better prepared.

Lately, I’ve noticed a lot of the “GOOD GUYS” chatting openly on my facebook page about how hard they trained TODAY. Many of these guys are returning state champs and state placers like Z. Dailey, L. Stieber, N. Sulzer, S. Stuckart, etc. Granted, they aren’t playing any other sports right now, but that’s not the point. They’re the EARLY BIRDS.

How can you expect to compete with these guys that seem to never stop preparing themselves, especially if you’re in another sport right now ?

DO WHAT THEY DO WHENEVER POSSIBLE WITHOUT ANY EXCUSES !
(and don’t let them get to far ahead)

To add more to this, I good friend of mine, who’s also a strength and conditioning specialist has been visiting the national powerhouse Blair Academy in New Jersey. Blair’s Head Coach, Jeff Buxton invited him to their facility in efforts to better prepare his team (in September) to regain their National Champ status they routinely own. I’d expect Blair to accomplish that goal by simply preparing now for high expectations LATER.

With that said…..

What are you going to do today that will help you accomplish your goal(s) ?

You have plenty of options to choose from. Based on what I’ve done in the past to what I preach everyday to what I’m reading on my Facebook page, the “good guys” are wrestling live, drilling, strength training, running, sprinting, watching film, basically doing what it takes to prepare themselves for better results later.

Keep your dreams alive and do something today that will help you perform better.

Thanks for reading,

– TR

It was fun to meet the wrestlers yesterday and see their excitement for the season. We have a lot of great days in front of us!! There were wrestlers talking about inviting other wrestlers to work out together in preperation for the season, I love to see this kind of commitment!! We can’t coach them yet but they can start preparing now!! I love the question posed “What are you going to do today that will help you accomplish your goal(s) ?” Get out a take a step towards your goal!!
Take Care,
Coach Robins

New year, new season, bright future!!

August 31, 2009

Well school is back in session. I hope the wrestlers are as excited about this season as I am. With the strength we had on the JV team last year, as they move on to varsity and we return several varsity wrestlers we are going to have a competitive team this year!!
Real quick a calander item, on September 15th immeadiately after school we will have a quick team meeting for wrestlers and potential wrestlers, if your in another sport and can just stop in to grab information please do, we will be short and to the point.
What did you do in the off season to prepare for this year? I remember a buddy and me pushing eachother all sumer long with different workouts, from a hard mountain bike ride, lifting weights, home run derby contest, to digging fence post. We turned everything into a competition and we pushed ourselves physically. Year round our focus was wrestling and turning anything and everything we did into training for wrestling.
I hope each of you wrestlers take advantage of the off season and are growing faster and stronger each day. If you are not in a fall sport be sure to plan in advance and set aside time each day to condition and prepare for the season. Everything you do can prepare you to be a champion on the mat. The choice to watch TV can even be turned into an opportunity to see how many pushups you can do in one commercial break. What you choose to eat while watching TV will effect you come November 9th when we hit the mat!
Enjoy the new school year and prepare for a great season. If you would like an off season plan to help you prepare for the wrestling season please let me know and we will build one for you.
Take care and look forward to training with you!!
Coach Allen

STATE TOURNAMENT RESULTS!

March 9, 2009

The climax of the entire wrestling season is the state wrestling tournament held at the Mckay Events Center in Orem. Thousands flock in to see their wrestlers compete with the very finest in the state of Utah. With a ton of enthusiasm, plenty of nerves, and a will to represent their school, the 8 Grizzly men from Copper Hills arrived with a mission: To be the very best. They wrestled tough, grueling matches for several days. After the first few rounds, the Grizzlies lost 6 of their wrestlers who proudly wrestled their hearts out. Remaining……. none other than the heavyweights, Max Adamson and Zac Jensen.

Both these wrestlers showed up to win it all. Max and Zac beat their first opponents convincingly. Max even defeated a foe from Viewmont that had knocked him out of the placing rounds last year at state. The next round, Zac pounded on Brightons wrestler and pinned him in the 2nd period. Max was matched against Dylan Stadel from Lehi, a returning state runner-up and nemesis for both wrestlers. After a valiant 3 periods, Dylan was the winner by 2 points. Advancing to the third round, Stadel from Lehi now had to prove he could beat two Grizzlies in a row. Zac Jensen wrestled an amazing match giving Stadel everything he had right down to the final few seconds. Stadel dug deep and managed to take down Jensen just before the time ran out. Stadel went on the win the state championship.

Now, with both wrestlers losing to the champion, they had to prove they were not quitters and deserved to be ranked with the best. Max Adamson won his next three matches and Jensen bounced back with a big win in the consolation bracket. When the smoke cleared, Copper Hills found themselves in the unlikely situation. Teammate vs Teammate – once again. Mustering all the strength they had, these two warriors stepped on the mat, shook hands, and represented their school. We, the coaches said nothing as we lined the mat to support these great athletes. After an exciting match, it was Max Adamson who won this time, defeating Zac by a mere point, 5-4.

To crown it all off, these two put aside their passion to win and gave each other a hug on the center of the mat. Truly, a coach could not be more proud than to see such an act of sportsmanship. What an accomplishment for these two. Max Adamson placed third and Zac Jensen placed fourth at states. Their efforts will go down in school history as their pictures will be framed in large plaques and added to the wall of champions in the wrestling room. Their example of determination, sportsmanship, and mental toughness will inspire many future Grizzly champions in the years to come. Congratulations to the parents, wrestlers, coaches, and community!
