College wrestling is onTV!!

March 18, 2010

I’ve been enjoying the state high school finals on demand on Comcast but now ESPN has a lot of college wrestling on. Wrestlers of all ages can learn a lot about the sport watching these college level wrestlers. I just saw a true freshman loose by 1 point in the SEC finals because of one mistake, in a scramble he didn’t keep his hips away and allowed a bear hug. I also noticed that the wrestlers are’t using any special moves, they are just hitting the same moves we teach. I have had several coaches tell me that it doesn’t take a lot of moves to be a great wrestler, you just have to master one or two. These college wrestlers were hitting low level singles, high crotches, they all stood up over and over until they got away, the stand up is the go to move for wrestlers from the bottom.
Take some time to watch and learn, you can gain a lot from watching the best!! Don’t forget to get some mat time in too. Coach Humphery’s will be starting the freestyle program tomorrow (3/18) and nothing replaces mat time!! Freestyle is a great opportunity to get extra mat time and experience.
We will see you next week, remember shirts and ties wrestlers, we will squeeze in a team picture while we are there.
